Carson Accountability & Transparency is proud to present the 2025 Sai Momoli Civic Excellence Award to Muliagatele Fuamauga (Mona) Porotesano for her several decades of service and dedication to the City of Carson.

Muliagatele Fuamauga (Mona) Porotesano has been a pillar of the Carson community since arriving in 1974 from Samoa. She became a member of the National Island Women's Association in the early 1980s, championing the needs and concerns of Pacific Islander women. As a founding member of the Sisters Alumni in 1986, Mona and her "Sisters" fundraised for academic scholarships to colleges/universities to youth in the community. Mona was one of the founding members for the 1st Samoan Heritage Event at Scott Park (now known as James Foisia Park). Her leadership extended to the creation of the Pacific Island Community Council, where she volunteered and worked to help organize the annual Pacific Islander cultural events sponsored by the Arts Department of Los Angeles in the 1990s. Mona is a Samoan language and culture specialist with a high chief title, Muliagatele. Mona's love for education and her commitment to serve Carson residents has shone through her dedicated work at the Carson Public Library where she served as a Library Assistant and retired after 25 years. One of her fondest memories was her work in the Literacy Program championed by First Lady Barbara Bush. A dedicated public servant, Mona served on the City of Carson​ Human Relations Commission from 1996-1997, and the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission from 2003-2011; she was later reappointed and served until 2013. She also participated in the community committee that helped establish the Long Beach Aquarium.
