Retail Outlets Begin Construction and New Housing Being Built in Carson

There is a significant amount of new development happening in Carson, which in addition to new jobs will bring new shopping opportunities and housing in the city.


The Los Angeles Premium Outlets project held a kickoff celebration Aug. 13. This significant retail center will be located just off the 405 Freeway at Avalon Boulevard. Set to open in 2021, the project would feature approximately 120 retail stores creating roughly 1,700 construction jobs and 1,800 permanent jobs. It is also estimated to produce about $4 million per year in local sales tax.


The project is being built by two of the largest shopping center developers in the country, Macerich and Simon, who between them own Santa Monica Place, the Lakewood Mall, and the Del Amo Fashion Plaza among others.


On the housing front, the Carson City Council unanimously approved a new 175-unit condominium project at the corner of Central Avenue and Victoria Street in Dominguez Hills, which is currently the site of eight non-operating oil wells.


Mayor Al Robles assured the public that the site would have to be deemed pristine before construction could begin and that the Department of Toxic Substance Control and the L.A. Regional Water Control Quality Board, among others, have already approved the project.


Additionally, the city broke ground on Evolve South Bay, a 300-unit complex located at Main Street and Del Amo Boulevard, and five other projects currently under construction, including the 357 mixed use Union South Bay, and the 51-unit Veterans Village.
